A 2.5-hour hands-on session with fifth-generation weaver Marsella Jefferson, covering the preparation of sweetgrass, pine needles, and palmetto into workable strands before learning the traditional coiling method that builds a Lowcountry sweetgrass basket row by patient row. Marsella shares the history of Gullah Geechee basket making throughout the class, explaining the specific materials, the community markets where baskets have been sold for generations, and what differentiates an authentic sweetgrass basket from a reproduction. Each participant completes a small finished basket to take home, along with the starter kit needed to continue at their own pace.
