Helium Comedy Club on Sansom Street has been bringing nationally touring comedians to Philadelphia since 2006, and its comedy academy offers stand-up classes for adults who want to write and perform their own material. The six-week Stand-Up 101 course covers joke structure, stage presence, and persona development, and wraps with a graduation showcase in front of a real audience. Classes are 18+ and meet weekly at the club, which seats around 300 in an intimate theater-style room.
