The Southern Letterpress operates inside the Paper Machine building on N. Rampart Street and offers the only public letterpress printing workshops in New Orleans, using a collection of antique presses and hand-set metal type accumulated over many years. Workshops cover the fundamentals of setting type, mixing ink by hand, and operating a platen press to pull finished prints on quality stock. The studio draws a mix of graphic designers, book arts enthusiasts, and people who simply want to understand how printing worked before digital tools took over.
