Woodworking
Beginner woodworking almost always means one project in one evening, with the dangerous cuts already made for you. That is a good thing: it means you leave with a real object rather than a lesson in machine safety.
The techniques, and how they differ
Studios list all of these as βwoodworkingβ. They are not the same evening.
Project classes (board, stool, box)
A pre-cut kit you assemble, shape and finish.
Good for The standard first class. You will use a sander and a drill, not a table saw.
Joinery
Cutting the joints that hold wood together β dovetails, mortise and tenon β usually by hand.
Good for The actual craft, and the thing that makes furniture furniture. Slow and quiet.
Woodturning
Shaping a spinning blank on a lathe into a bowl or spindle.
Good for Immediate and addictive. A completely different skill from flat woodworking.
Carving
Removing material with knives or gouges β spoons, reliefs, sculpture.
Good for Cheap to continue at home. Just a knife and a piece of wood.
If it's your first time, book this one
A one-evening project class to find out if you like the machines and the noise. Then joinery if you want to go deep.
Before you go
What to wear
Closed-toe shoes, no loose sleeves, no dangling jewellery. Safety glasses are provided.
What your hands do
Sanding is most of it, and it is dull work that makes the result good.
Do you take something home
Yes β a finished object, the same day. The most reliable take-home of any craft here.
