Introduction to Woodworking

About this class

A hands-on introductory class covering safe operation of the table saw, miter saw, and drill press along with hand tool fundamentals, marking, sawing to a line, chiseling a mortise, through a project sequence that produces a small but complete and functional wooden object by the end of the session. Instructors emphasize proper body positioning and blade respect throughout the class rather than treating safety as a preamble that students should hurry past to get to the fun part, because the habits formed in the first session are the ones that prevent injuries in every session afterward. Students who complete the intro class are authorized to use the shop's machinery independently during monitored open hours and are encouraged to develop a personal project as a next step.
