Sumi-e is a Japanese ink painting tradition that dates to the 8th century and is built on contradiction: maximum control and maximum acceptance of accident. In this one-hour class taught by an ICP-trained Japanese artist, you'll grind your own sumi ink from an ink stick, learn to hold the brush in the traditional suspended grip, and paint the four noble subjects (bamboo, plum blossom, orchid, and chrysanthemum) in the order prescribed by tradition. Each subject teaches a different stroke type. You'll finish a scroll-sized painting on handmade washi paper to take home. All materials (ink stone, sumi stick, brushes, washi paper) are provided.
