The Crucible on 7th Street in West Oakland is a nonprofit industrial arts school and performance venue offering adult classes in glassblowing, ceramics, metalsmithing, jewelry, welding, blacksmithing, and woodworking in a massive converted factory space two blocks from the West Oakland BART station. Classes are taught by professional working artists in studios equipped with industrial furnaces, pottery wheels, kilns, metalworking benches, and woodshop machinery. The Crucible has trained thousands of Oakland residents in industrial arts since its founding and is one of the most distinctive creative institutions in the Bay Area.
