Spoon Carving

About this class

Spoon carving is the oldest form of woodworking and one of the most meditative. In this three-hour workshop you'll start with a basswood or cherry blank (already cut to the rough spoon shape) and use a Mora hook knife and straight knife to hollow the bowl, refine the handle, and finish the edges. Your instructor teaches you to read the grain of the wood (which direction to carve so the blade doesn't catch) and demonstrates the push and pull cuts used in Scandinavian knife work. You'll leave with a finished, functional spoon and the skills to carve another at home. All tools, blanks, and finishing oil provided.
