Lake Merritt Boating Center's adult sailing lessons use the lake's protected flat water to teach basic sail handling, tacking, and jibing without the added challenge of Bay winds and current, making it the gentlest possible introduction to sailing in the East Bay. The City of Oakland program is taught by experienced instructors and the lake's compact size means the instructor can see and respond to students quickly during the on-water portion.
